Professor Christine Speidel Leads National Advocacy for Low-Income Persons during Pandemic

Federal Tax Clinic Director Prof. Christine Speidel led the American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation efforts to shape the Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”) delivery of economic impact payments (“EIP”) to low-income individuals.  Comments delivered to the IRS on behalf of the ABA Tax Section address a number of procedural challenges and barriers facing low-income individuals, and others, such as people who have experienced domestic violence and those with housing instability.  The ABA proposed specific steps to ensure EIP reach intended beneficiaries, particularly, those most vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic or scams.

In addition to her efforts with the ABA, Professor Speidel has publicly highlighted concerns related to the IRS private-public Free File program which are particularly salient as millions of Americans rush to file taxes to receive their EIP.
