Summary of an Unpaid Personal Leave of Absence:
Full-time and part-time faculty and staff members may request an unpaid leave of absence for personal, health or family-related reasons, if benefits are not available under the University’s FMLA, sick leave, STD or LTD plans.
Description of an Unpaid Personal Leave of Absence:
If a full-time or part-time faculty or staff member is unable to work, does not have benefits available, or is not approved for benefits under the University’s FMLA, sick leave, STD or LTD plans, the employee may request an unpaid personal leave. Faculty/staff, who have at least one (1) year of service, may request an unpaid leave of absence for up to one (1) year in duration with the approval of the faculty/staff member’s department head, Human Resources, the Dean and the Vice President for Academic Affairs, if applicable. Faculty/staff members with less than one (1) year of service may request leave equal to the length of their service only, with the approval of the faculty/staff member’s department head, Human Resources, the Dean and the Vice President for Academic Affairs, if applicable. All personal, unpaid leaves are approved at the discretion of the University.
Eligibility for an Unpaid Personal Leave of Absence:
All full-time and part-time faculty and staff may request an unpaid personal leave of absence.
Impact on Salary and Benefits While on Unpaid Personal Leave of Absence:
Starting on the first work day of an approved unpaid personal leave of absence, all salary and payroll deductions from the University will end. However, if the leave is for medical reasons of the faculty/staff member, all available sick and at least half of the available vacation balance must be used before the leave will be unpaid. If the leave is for other than medical reasons, at least half of available vacation must be used before the leave is unpaid.
If a faculty/staff member is approved for an unpaid personal leave, they will be offered continued coverage for medical, dental, health care flexible spending (FSA) and Employee Assistance Plan (EAP) benefits under COBRA, at the full COBRA rate. The length of the COBRA period is dependent upon the qualifying reason. Information regarding COBRA will be mailed directly from BenefitFocus, the University’s COBRA administrator. Also, information regarding conversion of current life insurance coverage will be sent directly from Liberty Mutual, the University’s life insurance provider.
Under this option, the position may not be held open, and may be filled after consultation with the department. Upon return from such leave, an individual may apply for open positions for which they may be qualified; however, openings may not always be available. Faculty positions may be filled in accordance with the provisions of their employment agreement, and/or the terms of the leave
