Dear Faculty and Staff:

In an email sent in May, I reminded us all about the “next big thing” for Villanova—an evolution into a "Doctoral/Research" university, as defined by The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

While it is easy to speak about this in terms of simply a "classification change," it is a richer, more important time of growth for our University than that might imply. This initiative will elevate the University's national stature and ensure the interdependence of teaching, research and scholarship on our campus. I believe that Villanova can be an example in higher education of how producing the highest levels of scholarly research can intersect with and strengthen an exceptional undergraduate experience.

As promised in my previous email, I want to share with you a document that provides more detail on what this change means for Villanova and the careful work that has been done by members of our community to make sure this is the right next step. This information was the topic of discussion at the annual Board of Trustees retreat in June.

As I have said before, this is an exciting time for Villanova. Together, we are charting a course that will allow the our distinctive intellectual community to thrive for generations to come. I look forward to working with all of you as we shape the future of our great University.

Sincerely,
