In the Spotlight: 175 Years Strong


Jan. 5, 2017, is the 175th anniversary of the date when a handful of visionary Augustinian friars took possession of the Belle-Air estate to found a college and monastery. To celebrate its growth since 1842; its mission rooted in truth, unity and love; and its vibrant community on campus and off, Villanova University will host special events, programs and exhibits throughout the coming year. Glimpsing Heaven on Earth


"Garden of Miracles: Finding the Divine in Everyday Life," on display at the Villanova University Art Gallery through Nov. 28, is a collection of landscapes and still lifes by Philadelphia-area artist Monique Sarkessian. The exhibit, which comprises more than 40 paintings in oil and encaustic wax, creates an indoor paradise of vibrant jewel tones, expressive brushstrokes and lush textures.

Cosmic Disturbance


Marisol, an apocalyptic tale written by Jose Rivera and directed by James Ijames, will bring chaos and comedy to the stage at Villanova Theatre at Vasey Hall Nov. 8-20. Described by the Los Angeles Times as "a harrowing and timely dark fantasia that keeps you laughing right through the misery," Marisol won the 1993 Obie Award. Building a Culture of Health

In the face of what many say is a disconnected health care system, nurses can play key roles in ensuring that health flourishes for all. Susan Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation senior adviser for Nursing, will explain how in her talk, "Nursing Leadership and a Culture of Health," the College of Nursing's 38th annual Distinguished Lecture in Nursing. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 21, in the Connelly Center's Villanova Room.

Christians in the Contemporary Middle East

International scholars, government officials, and experts from nongovernmental organizations will convene Dec. 5-6 at the Connelly Center for the conference "Christians in the Contemporary Middle East: Religious Minorities and the Struggle for Secular Nationalism and Citizenship." Sponsored by Villanova University, the sessions will explore the complexities of this issue and strategies for combating persecution. Celebrate the Season at Villanova


Celebrate the season with the talented groups sponsored by the Office of Music Activities. Villanova's singers, dancers and musicians will provide a wide variety of performances for audiences of all ages. Recent News from Campus

Among the Nation's Top 50


In the U.S. News & World Report's 2017 "Best Colleges" rankings, released Sept. 13, Villanova ranked in the top 50 of the nation's best colleges and universities. The ranking, which is determined by academic reputation, faculty resources and other indicators of excellence, placed the University in the top 16 percent of institutions on the list.

Villanovans Selected as Forbes Scholars

Among the 1,000 students nationwide selected for the new Forbes Under 30 Scholars program were 12 from Villanova University. The scholars spent Oct. 16-19 in Boston at the 2016 Forbes Under 30 Summit, a gathering of the world's top young entrepreneurs and game changers.

Athletic Center Honors Retiring Coach


The newest athletics facility on campus bears the name and pays tribute to longtime head football coach Andy Talley, who is retiring at the end of the 2016 season. Several Villanova dignitaries took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 21 to dedicate the Andrew J. Talley Athletic Center in the west end zone of Villanova Stadium. It will be home to the football program and contains amenities that will benefit all student-athletes.

Building Audience Profile for FOX Sports GO App


Communication students from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are partnering with FOX Sports University, a nationwide program that allows Fox Sports to cultivate creative minds and expand its sports platform into the academic realm at select universities. For the inaugural, semester-long project, students are tasked with building an audience profile for FOX Sports GO, the company's TV Everywhere, a video streaming app.

Villanova to Help Cable Industry Manage Power Consumption

Villanova's RISE (Resilient Innovation through Sustainable Engineering) Forum will collaborate with the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers and its global arm, the International Society of Broadband Experts, to develop a headend and hub energy assessment tool that will help leaders in the cable telecommunications industry manage power consumption more sustainably. The ultimate goal is to help the industry meet its energy-reduction targets by the end of the decade.

Battling the Growing Threat of Ransomware


Henry Carter, PhD, assistant professor of Computer Science, recently assisted in building CryptoDrop, an innovative software that detects and prevents ransomware from encrypting hundreds of files. Ransomware is a type of malware that holds files hostage until the user pays the hacker a sum of money, causing millions of dollars of loss annually. It has been used recently to attack police station records and hospital databases.
