1. What inspired you to join the VSB mentor program?
"I wanted to join the mentor program because my mom has had mentors in her career and always told me how influential her mentors were and how they helped her to expand her network. Mentors can impact your career, but can also provide insight into personal aspects as well. I wanted to have a similar experience with someone outside of the company I am working for."
"I have been a part of the VSB MBA mentoring program for a few years and was excited to hear that it is now available for undergrad students. I know I would have benefitted from having a mentor as an undergrad, so I am so happy to provide that opportunity as a mentor."
2. How has your experience compared to your expectation?
"I had never had a formal mentor prior to this experience and being paired my sophomore year has been so helpful. Jen always offers to help me in any way she can, and answers any questions I have. I was fortunate enough to have had internships in New York the past two summers, so this has offered a great opportunity for us to meet and discuss what I am doing at work, my career aspirations, and insights into her career path. Throughout my interview process, she reviewed my resume and offered suggestions about how to enhance my interview skills. This past summer, while I was living in New York, we met several times for lunch or dinner. I even got to visit her apartment rooftop and we made dinner! My experience with the mentor program has gone above and beyond what I expected."
"It has been a very rewarding experience! Meghan has used this opportunity to the fullest and regularly asks for my advice. Because she interned in NYC the past two summers, we have been able to spend a good amount of time together. I have also found the emails from Michele G. to be very helpful as they provide ideas for how I can reach out to Meghan, all while knowing what is going on at VSB."
3. What makes your relationship a successful one?
"I think the most important part of making a mentorship successful is constant communication. Jen has been great at remembering to reach out and ask how things are going. This keeps us in touch and allows us to plan times to get together in person."
"I think it is so successful because Meghan is a smart young woman who has recognized the value in having this kind of relationship. Plus, we are able to regularly meet in person and stay in touch via email."
5. What has been the best part about having a mentor/mentee?
"The best part about having a mentor is getting advice from someone who has been through the same experiences of searching for internships and jobs, and receiving insight into what could be the best path for you."
"It has been great to have a connection with her and, in turn, with campus. As an alumna, it’s easy to feel distanced from it, but hearing from someone in VSB still keeps me interested in what new and exciting things Villanova is providing to students."
6. Do you have a best practice to share with other pairs in the program?
"The best way to make your relationship successful is to reach out and plan to meet face -to-face whenever possible. The times that we have been able to meet in-person have strengthened our relationship and allow us to get to know each other better. This helps to guide our conversations and allows the mentorship experience to be more successful."
"Regular communication and trust are important for any pair. Being approachable enough for your mentee to seek your advice is key to the relationship benefiting them."
