Villanova, Pa. – Two faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Villanova University were awarded grants from the Fulbright Association to support their research and teaching in 2015-16. Paul Steege, PhD, associate professor, History, and Susan Mackey-Kallis, PhD, associate professor, Communication, will spend the spring 2016 semester fulfilling their Fulbright awards abroad.
Dr. Paul Steege was awarded a Fulbright Association Senior Scholar Research Grant. The grant allows Dr. Steege to conduct research in libraries and archives in and around Berlin. He will be hosted by the Center for Contemporary History Research in Potsdam. His project, entitled “Everyday Life, Everyday Violence: Berlin and the Twentieth Century” explores the experience and representation of violence in Berlin from 1917 to 1987. The project investigates individual experiences as a way to reimagine the iconic city. Dr. Steege's areas of specialty include the history of Berlin, life in Nazi Germany, and the World War II Berlin blockade and airlift.
Dr. Susan Mackey-Kallis has been selected for a Fulbright Award to Japan, and will lecture and teach three courses at two Japanese universities — Ochanomizu University and Japan Women's University — for five months. Dr. Mackey-Kallis’ grant covers roundtrip travel, a monthly stipend, supplementary allowances, housing, and health and accident insurance. Dr. Mackey-Kallis is an expert in film analysis and commentary, particularly in regard to pop culture. Her areas of expertise include the rhetoric of film, women in contemporary cinema and myth in media and culture.
The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by then-Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Fulbright Program awards approximately 8,000 grants annually. Roughly 1,600 U.S. students, 4,000 foreign students, 1,200 U.S. scholars, and 900 visiting scholars receive awards, in addition to several hundred teachers and professionals. Approximately 310,000 "Fulbrighters" have participated in the Program since its inception in 1946.
