Brian Wynne ’86 LAS, Angelina Mondavi ’04 LAS and Frances Burns ’97 BA, ’99 MPA Recognized
10.30.2013 VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) recently recognized its 2013 Alumni Medallion recipients at a special on-campus celebration. Brian Wynne ’86 LAS (Communication) received the College’s Alumni Medallion. Wynne is Senior Vice President, Strategy, Franchise Leadership and Business Transformation, Coca-Cola North America Group. In addition, Angelina Mondavi ’04, (Chemistry; not pictured) received the Young Alumni Medallion, and Frances Burns ’97 BA (Political Science), ’99 MPA, received the Graduate Alumni Medallion.
“The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Villanova University is honored to recognize the lives and accomplishments of its most distinguished alumni every year,” said Jean Ann Linney, PhD, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. “Brian Wynne, Angelina Mondavi and Frances Burns represent three very different fields, yet they are each passionate about sharing their success and knowledge with others. What they also have in common is their ability to make full use of their liberal arts and sciences education not only in their day-to-day work but also to make important and lasting contributions to the world around them.”

Brian Wynne ’86 LAS (Communication)
Brian Wynne is Senior Vice President for The Coca-Cola Company. He has worked in the Coca-Cola System for 25 years, and currently has responsibility for the development and implementation of the strategic plan for the North American division of The Coca-Cola Company. In addition, Brian has responsibility for the Company’s U.S. franchise bottler relationships and the transformation/evolution of its U.S. business model.
Brian is a 1986 graduate of Villanova, earning a bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts. His respect for his Villanova education has made a tremendous impact on the University and its students. He is a member of the Villanova University President’s Leadership Circle, an advisory group created to assist the President with strategic plan-related initiatives. Brian was instrumental in bringing Coca Cola’s “First Generation Scholars” scholarship program to Villanova. Currently 10 University students are being supported through that program. Villanova is one of only five Coke “partner schools” on the East Coast in its management training program—institutions to which the company sends recruiters to interview on campus.
Brian also serves on the board of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and is active in Special Olympics Georgia. Prior his current role with Coca-Cola North America Group, Brian served as President of the U.S. Still Beverage Unit, which is comprised of the Company’s non-carbonated brands in the juice, sports drink, water, tea and energy categories. In that role Brian oversaw the brand marketing and strategy for several billion-dollar brands, including: PowerAde®, vitaminwater®, Minute Maid®, Simply® and Dasani®.
Prior to that, Brian was Vice President and General Manager for the world’s largest Coca-Cola bottler, Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE), where he was responsible for all Eastern U.S. business operations. Brian served as Vice President of Business Development and Chief Revenue Officer for North America, where he was responsible for business planning, marketing operations and pricing strategy.
Brian also served as CCE's Vice President of North American Human Resources, where he helped design and implement a new North American operating model. From 2000-2005, Brian was Vice President and General Manager of the New York/New Jersey division.
Brian told Villanova Magazine in 2010 that his Villanova education set him on the path to success. He said, “You gain solid values, receive a great education, develop a practical approach to your career and gain a belief and confidence in yourself and your future.”
Young Alumni Medallion
Angelina Mondavi ’04 LAS (Chemistry)
Angelina Mondavi is at the forefront of a new generation of winemakers in Napa Valley, California. She began her career at the age of 10 assisting the lab manager at Charles Krug Winery. She graduated from Villanova in 2004 with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Business, creating a solid foundation for her future in the wine industry.
After graduation she branched out to work at the Hess Collection Winery and coordinated laboratory and bottling operations during harvest. Her vision for her future rested on learning winemaking techniques in Australia. After harvest at Hess, she assumed a harvest position at the Yalumba Wine Company, in Barossa Valley, Australia, where she expanded her laboratory knowledge and developed experience in cellar operations. She chose to further her education, and, in 2006, graduated with her Master’s in Oenology from the University of Adelaide’s Waite Campus located in South Australia.
Before returning to the Napa Valley, she was the wine manager at Enzo’s Restaurant where she not only produced the wine list but also conducted wine staff training. A final stint in Australia was as a cellar hand at the famed Cape Mentelle Winery. In 2007 Angelina joined Pine Ridge Vineyards as their assistant winemaker, remaining there until 2010. Since then, she has embarked on new adventures; the first being assistant winemaker under the tutelage of Jayson Woodbridge for One True Vine, LLC. There she is responsible for Hundred Acre, Cherry Pie, and Layer Cake. The second is a joint venture between Angelina and her cousin, Robert Mondavi Jr., called Fourth Leaf.
Lastly, she is the winemaker and co-proprietor for Dark Matter Wines, a joint-venture with her three sisters. As a result of her hard work, Dark Matter Wines recently released its first vintage, a 2006 Howell Mountain Zinfandel. The fourth-generation winemaker is determined to achieve what no Mondavi has yet: a 100-point wine. She is a member of the Advisory Council of the Villanova School of Business Center for Marketing and Public Policy Research.
Graduate Alumni Medallion
Frances Burns ’97 BA (Political Science), ’99 MPA
Frances Burns has held a variety of fascinating positions in government and the non-profit world. She is a passionate, engaged and dedicated public servant who exemplifies Villanova’s values of service, community and the common good. She is currently the Chief Operating Officer for the School District of Philadelphia.
Frances is a double Villanova grad, receiving her BA in Political Science in 1997 and her Master of Public Administration (MPA) in 1999. She began her career in 1997 at Villanova as Intramural Director in the Department of Athletics. Her true vocation, however, was government work, and in 1998 she joined the City of Philadelphia’s Commerce Department as a representative of the Mayor's Business Action Team.
In early 2000, Frances was hired by the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority (PICA) in Philadelphia as Director of Capital Analysis and Operations. PICA is a fiscal oversight agency that monitors the spending, income, and Five-Year Plan of the City of Philadelphia. In working with PICA, Frances gained budgetary insight that led to her next venture in late 2001 as Assistant Budget Director for the City of Philadelphia.
In 2003 Frances assumed a new challenge in the Managing Director's Office as Assistant Managing Director. She worked closely with the Department of Licenses and Inspections, which is the City's regulatory, code enforcement, and development services department. That led to a position as Deputy Commissioner for Administration. In 2007 she left the City of Philadelphia to serve as Executive Director of the Manayunk Development Corporation (MDC), a non-profit special services district and business organization. It was the first time since her work at Villanova that Frances was not employed by a government agency. However, the break from government work, what she views as her vocation, didn't last long.
In the summer of 2008 Frances rejoined the City of Philadelphia as the Commissioner of Licenses and Inspections, assuming responsibility for nearly 400 employees and the task of transforming the Department into a friendlier, faster, smarter, better service department. She served as Commissioner until June of 2012, when she returned to PICA as its Executive Director. Her responsibilities there included monitoring the City of Philadelphia’s revenues, expenditures, programs, management, cash flow, and economy; reviewing the assumptions and projections in the City’s annual $20 billion Five-Year Financial Plan; and, authoring reports on the city’s financial and economic outlook.
In May of 2013, she was hired as the Chief Operating Officer for the School District of Philadelphia – perhaps her greatest challenge yet.
Frances is an active and engaged alum of Villanova’s MPA program, as the honored speaker at the first Pi Alpha Alpha fall colloquium a few years back, and as a panel member last spring. She has hosted interns from the MPA Program, and will be an instructor in the online program as well.
