Career Information

Information regarding potential employment may be accessed by contacting the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. Internships providing academic credit through an outside work environment are not available. Students with an undergraduate degree in mathematics are prepared to enter into a variety of graduate programs such as finance and economics.   • Actuary/Insurance firms (Towers-Perrin, Metropolitan Life, Prudential, Hartford Life Insurance, PriceWaterHouseCoopers, Associated Pensions Consulting, NAC Reinsurance)
  • Pharmaceutical and Atatistical firms (Merck, Wyeth-Ayerst, U. S. Census Bureau, American College of Radiology)
  • Other firms: Accenture, Boeing Corp., Lockheed-Martin, CIGNA, Ernst and Young, Raytheon, Shared Medical Systems, Johnson and Johnson, SCT Corp, Peoples' Heritage Bank, Sanchez Computer, HTI Voice Solutions, Bell Atlantic, BellSouth, Centerbrook Architects, Landscape Services, Electronic Data Services, etc.

The Mathematics Association of America has a "special interest group" SIGMMA of business, industry and government (BIG) mathematicians that may have information about careers in those areas for mathematicians.

Lillian Lieber (1886-1986), American mathematician (Russian immigrant from Ukraine as a child) and popular mathematics writer who used mathematics in defense of positive human values (see the essays 2018 and 2017 by woman science writer Maria Popova), with whimsical drawings by her husband Hugh to illustrate her points.
