Research Training and Compliance

Villanova requires the following to be in place in order to be compliant with federal regulations on research:

Compliance Training -
All researchers must complete the Responsible Conduct of Research and Conflicts of Interest modules. The Responsible Conduct of Research training must be renewed every three years; Conflict of Interest training every four years. If applicable, researchers must also complete Human or Animal Subjects Research; and Export Control.

Contact Lyla or the Office of Grants and Contracts (OGC) if you need to know your expiration date or if you need help registering.

Financial Conflict of Interest Disclosure
To insure that no financial conflicts of interest exist related to the proposed research, all researchers (faculty, staff, or student) must also complete FCOI.  For access, please contact OGC at ext. 4220 or

Any project that involves the use of human subjects in any capacity must be reviewed and approved by the University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). Information regarding the IRB can be found here.

FCOI is also required before IRB approval can be issued.

Training is also provided in human subjects research at several levels. Human subjects training is required only for individuals who work with human subjects or data derived from human subjects. If uncertain, researchers should check with ORA to confirm the required training modules relative to the research project conducted.

Human subjects proposals are submitted through an electronic grants management software package, CAYUSE. Information about CAYUSE can be found here.  Training sessions on the use of CAYUSE are regularly scheduled by ORA and announced on Campus Currents. When proposals are submitted through CAYUSE by a principal investigator, they are routed for approval, first to the appropriate Department Chair(s) and then by the Associate Dean for Research in the College, before they are forwarded to the IRB.
