Media Production

Introductory Courses (1000 level)

Students must complete the 2 required introductory courses:

  • COM 1000 - Surv of Communication Studies
  • COM 1100 - Public Speaking

Theory Courses (2000 level)

The following theory course is required for this specialization:

  • COM 2340 - Theories of Visual Communication & Culture

Students must choose one (1) additional theory class from the following:

  • COM 2240 - Theories of Perform Studies
  • COM 2280 - Theories of Persuasion
  • COM 2300 - Theories of Mass Communication
  • COM 2400 - Theories of Interpersonal Com

Advanced Topics Courses (3000 level)

Students must complete the following class:

  • COM 3301 - Intro to Film & Video Production

Students must choose one (1) class from the following:

  • COM 3308 - Digital Image Production
  • COM 3321 - Interactive Media Design

Students must choose one (1) additional Media Production class from the following (but are encouraged to use free electives to take more):

  • COM 3302 - Advanced Film & Video Production
  • COM 3308 - Digital Image Production
  • COM 3321 - Interactive Media Design

Students must choose one (1) Media Studies course from the following:

  • COM 3303 - Screenwriting
  • COM 3340 - Film History
  • COM 3341 - Gender and Film
  • COM 3342 - International Cinema
  • COM 3343 - Contemporary Cinema
  • COM 3351 - Media & Society
  • COM 3352 - Media & Technology
  • COM 3353 - Media & Politics
  • COM 3354 - Media Criticism
  • COM 3355 - Media Effects
  • COM 3356 - Media Audiences
  • COM 3390 - Special Topics in Media & Film

Students must choose any other (1) complementary 3000 level course in a third area. COM 3600 - Social Justice Documentary does not count toward the requirement of a 6th 3000-level class in a complementary third area.

Advanced Research Courses (4000 level)

Students must take one (1) of the following:

  • COM 4001 - Qualitative Research in COM
  • COM 4002 - Quantitative Research in COM

Capstone Course (5000 level)

Students must complete the Capstone Course:

  • COM 5050 - Senior Project

Internship Requirement

Students must complete a Production Internship for this specialization. The Internship must be approved by the Area Coordinator.

A&S Core Fine Arts

Students interested in Film & Video Production are encouraged to take COM 1300 - Film Analysis, to satisfy the Fine Arts Core Curriculum requirement.

Other Courses in the Specialization

The following classes are part of the Media Production area, but do not count towards the 3-course sequence to fulfill the requirements of the Specialization. They may be considered a Media Production course for majors in different specializations looking to fullfill one of their non-area course requirements, or as a free elective for students in the Media Production specialization:

Note: COM 3600 is a 6-credit course. For students specializing in areas other than Media Production, 3 of the 6 credits can be counted as one of your two non-area 3000-level classes. The other 3 will be considered a Free Elective. For students specializing in Media Production, all 6 credits will be counted towards Free Electives.
