The Loring & Beulah Baker, and John & Gertrude Maloney Mission Prize is presented annually to a graduating senior in Astronomy & Astrophysics, who has demonstrated outstanding mission-centered accomplishments. The prize celebrates the lives of the Baker and Maloney parents, whose guidance enabled those around them to see the path to excellence, humility, and compassion.
The Maloney family is in close consultation with, and is informed by recommendations from, the departmental faculty. The family makes the final decision regarding the awardee. The amount of the prize is $14,000 US dollars, and may be awarded annually.
A candidate for the prize may apply personally, or a candidate may be nominated by any member of the departmental faculty. A candidate completes the application process.
The application process consists of:
1) a two-page statement by the candidate, documenting the contributions to the advancement of the goals set forth in the mission statement of Villanova University.
2) two or more letters of recommendation from individuals associated with Villanova University, attesting to the success of the candidate's specific contributions to mission.
3) a statement by the candidate demonstrating financial need.
Applications and letters are submitted to the chairperson of the department and are due prior to March 1.
