Learning on the Fly with Philadelphia Magazine

brett klein

No stranger to the field of journalism, Brett Klein ’16 CLAS (Communication) is working as an editorial intern with Philadelphia Magazine this semester. The former editor of The Villanovan, Brett learned of the internship from Michael Bradley, adjunct professor, Communication, who knew Brett was interested in journalism after taking two courses with Tom Ksiazek, PhD on the history or journalism and multimedia journalism. The past two summers, Brett had worked as an editorial intern with Fox News in New York City.

As an editorial intern, Brett writes news and political articles for the Philadelphia Magazine website, which includes interviews and investigative work. He is often tasked with finding the news for website publication. One of his most memorable articles that he wrote involved investigating a video that showed a cyclist involved in a road rage incident. “A lot of my internship is learning on the fly,” Brett said, which in this case, involved interviewing the cyclist and talking to a spokesperson for the Philadelphia District Attorney. “A lot of what I learned at the Villanovan and in my classes is that as a journalist, you’re only as good as your audience thinks you are. It makes you work harder and be more careful with your reporting.”

A native of Chappaqua, New York, Brett wishes to pursue a career in print journalism upon graduation.
