Alex Martins ’86 VSB found his calling in the Jake Nevin Fieldhouse as a student assistant in Villanova University’s Sports Information department. Building on the foundation established in the halls of the Business School, Martins combined his passion for athletics with his education and began his career. He never looked back.
In 1989, at just 25 years old, Martins joined the newly franchised Orlando Magic as director of Publicity/Media Relations, making him the youngest public relations director in the NBA. Today, with more than 25 years’ experience in sports management, Martins is chief executive officer of the Magic – a position he has held since December 2011.
Amid his success, Martins, a New Jersey native, and his wife, Juliet, have made Villanova University a priority. Alex heralds the University as his career’s launch pad, and a place that gave him so much. As an active member of the President’s Club and the Athletics Campaign Committee, Martins supports the vision for the University and is committed to growing the athletics program and strengthening student opportunities through For the Greater Great®: the Villanova Campaign to Ignite Change. At the Tampa Bay Campaign Celebration on February 5, Martins encouraged alumni and friends to continue their support of the University. “Together, we can ignite the kind of change on campus and around the world that provides our students with the tools, facilities and experiences necessary to compete and succeed in the classroom and in our global community,” he said.
