License Plate FAQs

Please review the general information section on the back of your application for additional questions and guidelines not listed below.

How long does it take to receive my plate?

All new applications are processed through Villanova’s Bursar Department before being released to the DMV. Once the DMV receives the applications, they undergo processing on their end. Turnaround times vary by plate type. Custom personalized plates take 8-10 weeks as plates are handmade by the Special Tag unit. Sequential plates take 4-6 weeks. On average, the entire process may take anywhere from 60-120 days from the time your application is received to delivery. If you have questions about the status of your plate, email Shonna Kydd at shonna.kydd@villanova.edu.

Why isn’t there a Villanova plate offered for my state?

The law requires a minimum number of prepaid license plate applications from a specific organization before the Division may approve the issuance of the plate. For example, Virginia requires 450 and New Jersey requires 500 signed prepaid applications to begin the process. Many states also require a minimum number of plates to be ordered annually to keep the program operational. When the minimum number is not met, the plate may be discontinued.

If a Villanova plate is not available in your state, you can still show your Wildcat pride. The University Bookstore offers Alumni license plate frames and other automotive accessories.

Can I submit my application directly to the DMV?
For new plates, the initial prepaid application must be sent directly to the address indicated above based on state. PA and MD applications must be sent directly to the Villanova University Alumni Association, and DE should be sent directly to the Special Plates Coordinator. Once the University processes your payment and application, applications will be delivered to the DMV.

However, replacement plate requests should be sent directly to the DMV. Please see instructions below on how to order a replacement plate.

How do I order a replacement plate?

If your plate has been lost or damaged, you will have to submit a new application and payment to receive a replacement plate. Replacement plate fees are listed below.

For Pennsylvania Replacement Plates, submit the following pre-authorized PA application and check for the amount listed below:

  • If you would like to keep the same plate number, the replacement fee is $130. Please complete Section D, Optional Personalization Request with your requested plate number.
  • If you would like for PennDOT to select a new plate number for you (sequential plate), the replacement fee is $26.

Please send your signed and completed PA application and check directly to the PennDOT address below. Checks can be made out to the PA Department of Transportation.
