BASICS: BRIEF ALCOHOL SCREENING AND INTERVENTION FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

Following a harm reduction approach, BASICS is designed to assist students in examining their drinking behavior in a judgment-free environment. It is completely voluntary and confidential. BASICS is not an abstinence-only program. BASICS is designed to help students make better decisions regarding alcohol. This consultation promotes responsible drinking, tips on making healthier choices, and provides important information and skills for risk reduction. To identify discrepancies between a student’s alcohol use and their perceptions of their Villanova peers’ alcohol use, every student completes a BASICS online survey before their scheduled BASICS consultation.

NUTRITION COACHING

Nutrition coaching is a one-on-one session with a registered dietitian to provide evidence-based nutrition education. These free sessions are offered to provide short-term support for students. Topics for nutrition coaching vary, but some topics may include sports nutrition, food allergies, weight management, eating in dining halls, and general nutrition for healthy habits. Nutrition coaching consists of one initial session and up to three follow-up sessions. Each session is tailored to the student's specific needs and will address strategies to make behavior changes to live a more balanced, well-nourished life.

SLEEP ASSESSMENT AND PERSONALIZED FEEDBACK

Sleep has many positive effects on health and well-being, but many college students report getting insufficient sleep each night. Students struggle with balancing their time, stress, and sleep. The consultation with a Health Promotion staff member helps to identify additional strategies and resources for improving sleep. A student first completes an online assessment which is used to develop a customized feedback profile for them to use in their consultation session. Students are also asked to keep a two-week sleep diary in which they closely track their daily routine and sleep hygiene for additional feedback and recommendations.

Complete the initial online sleep assessment survey.

STRESS MANAGEMENT FEEDBACK PROGRAM

The stress management feedback program focuses on building student skills in resourcefulness and addressing specific expressions of stress. Stress is the #1 reported reason for negative academic consequences among Villanova students. The stress management feedback program consists of three, 30-minute feedback sessions based on The Stress Profiler and a graduated series of steps to evaluating and improving stress management strategies.

TOBACCO CESSATION COACHING

The Office of Health Promotion uses the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking program. Because no single cessation technique is effective for all smokers, the program includes a comprehensive variety of evidence-based cessation techniques. The Freedom From Smoking program consists of eight sessions. It is delivered by an American Lung Association-trained facilitator. Each session uses techniques based on pharmacological and psychological principles and methods designed to help smokers gain control over their behavior.
