GRADUATE PROGRAMS IN THEATRE

ARTFUL. IMAGINATIVE. INSPIRING.

Villanova Graduate Theatre is one of the few theatre MA programs in the United States that places equal emphasis on scholarly and creative work. The program is designed for students who appreciate both the practical and the academic aspects of theatre, and our students come from a variety of academic backgrounds, spanning the humanities and sciences. The result is a vibrant, diverse community of students with a passion for theatre as the common denominator.

WHY VILLANOVA THEATRE?

Villanova Graduate Theatre is one of the few programs in the United States that places equal emphasis on scholarly and creative work. Choose the path that works for you:

Each year Villanova Theatre stages four productions with plays and musicals ranging from classic to contemporary. Productions are directed and designed by faculty and freelance theatre artists. Graduate students supervised by full-time production staff are the mainstay of the season, serving as actors, stage managers and production crew. Villanova Theatre productions are reviewed by media outlets from the greater Philadelphia area.

At Villanova, you will learn from award-winning theatre artists who have distinguished themselves in the field of professional theatre in directing, writing, designing, acting and producing. Our professors have won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and published scholary works in the field.

Villanova’s new John and Joan Mullen Center for the Performing Arts is a hub for performances, creativity, engagement, and exploration for the University’s performing arts community - enriching Villanova’s campus and enhancing educational opportunities across the University.

“I was attracted to the Villanova program because it allowed me to keep doing it all. I wanted to be a leader and learn the ins and outs of running a nonprofit theatre, but I also wanted to continue to act, direct and pursue academic inquiries. That degree has been very useful in a city like Philadelphia that values a well-rounded theatre professional. I think I have a clear, full picture of what theatremaking is and what it involves, and that’s been a big benefit to my career.”

— Hallie Martenson ’15 MA

The program offers a number of graduate Tuition Scholarships and Graduate Assistantships. The Tuition Scholarships cover the cost of tuition, while the Graduate Assistantships cover tuition plus a stipend. To be considered for these funding sources, you should apply for admission in the fall semester.
