AFRICANA STUDIES
Africana Studies engages Africa and peoples of African descent wherever and whenever they might be found. It brings together students and scholars using a diverse array of methods, from ethnographic to literary-critical, from philosophical to historical, in order to explore the worlds of Black people and the meaning of justice for Black people.
The Africana Studies Program encourages students to study abroad and engage in coursework that deepens their understanding of Africa and the African diaspora.
Major: Global Intedisciplinary Studies offers students the opportunity to major in Africana Studies. The GIS: Africana Studies major requires that students study abroad for one semester or a summer program with a minimum length of 6-weeks. Majors are encouraged to consider programs in Africa or African diaspora countries.
Majors should review the GIS MAP for additional GIS major information on "Academic Planning" and "Timing" for their study abroad experience.
Minor: Students can also pursue an Africana Studies minor. Please contact the Director of the Africana Studies program to discuss the curriculum and how to fit an Africana Studies minor into your Villanova curriculum.
The African Studies Program encourages students to consider programs that provide practical experiences. Internships, field work and lab research are wonderful ways to gain hands-on, professional experience.
Study abroad opportunities are not limited to formal instruction. Consider taking advantage of the unique research, internship, and fieldwork opportunities available in different regions of the world.

It is important to plan ahead as it is not uncommon for scholarship deadlines to occur much earlier than a Villanova or program application deadlines.
There are many scholarships available for students through Villanova University, our partner programs and other external sources, like the US Government. The OEA can help students with the scholarship search and application process. If a scholarship is found outside of the OEA scholarship page, students should have it reviewed by the OEA to determine if it is a viable option.
