On Tuesday, May 15, the College of Professional Studies (CPS) hosted the third annual Awards Ceremony. Villanova University President Father Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD; Villanova University Provost Patrick G. Maggitti, PhD; Interim Dean Christine Kelleher Palus, PhD, students and their families, as well as faculty and staff, came together to celebrate the success of CPS students during the 2017-2018 academic year. The evening recognized the achievements of Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society inductees, paralegal program graduates, distinguished student award-winners and a very special staff award.

10 CPS students were inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda, an honor society established in 1947 at the University of Cincinnati which celebrates the scholarship and leadership of adult students, and is devoted to the advancement of nontraditional students continuing their education. Villanova's College of Professional Studies has been a member of Alpha Sigma Lambda since 1958, and our Chapter has a present enrollment of over two hundred and fifty students, faculty and alumni. To be eligible for induction, students must have completed at least 24 credits from Villanova with a minimum GPA of 3.20 and also be in the top 20% of all CPS students. Provost Maggitti and Dean Palus were also inducted as honorary members of Alpha Sigma Lambda.

Paralegal Certificate students successfully completed a rigorous and intensive course curriculum during the 2017-2018 academic year. More than 30 graduates attended this year’s awards dinner and were recognized and presented with their certificates. Two students, Rachel McManus and Christine Duncan, were awarded the “Distinguished Student Award” for demonstrating great perseverance, academic excellence, and for embodying the Augustinian values of Unitas, Caritas, and Veritas.

Lindsey Klemyk, the first CPS online bachelor’s degree graduate, was presented the Grit Award for her passion, persistence and commitment to her education. She works full time in the legal department at Aetna where she is implementing an enterprise program to streamline and automate the way Aetna does contracting. Lindsey traveled all the way from Southington, CT to attend the Awards Dinner and came back down for Commencement weekend just a few days later with her husband and twin girls.

Finally, Maryjo Sireci, a CPS staff member received the Steve Merritt Award, which was created in honor of a beloved administrator at Villanova who passed away. This award celebrates dedicated and humble service to Villanova, and the commitment to living out the Villanova virtues of Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas in supporting the students of CPS. Maryjo recently celebrated 25 years at Villanova University in various departments and roles. She is a shining example of selflessness and dedication for all of the staff in CPS as well as the greater Villanova community.

When asked to reflect upon the Awards dinner, Dean Palus said “The Awards Dinner was a joyous occasion where we celebrated the amazing accomplishments of our students. We were honored to recognize the induction of candidates into the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society as well as those students completing the Paralegal Program and those receiving their Bachelor’s degree. We are so proud of the many accomplishments of our students, and inspired by their dedication and perseverance!”
