Tips for writing an effective letter of recommendation:

While the content of your letter is entirely up to you, here are some general recommendations for what topics to address and where.

• 1st Paragraph - This is your opening statement. Your opening sentence can often communicate volumes. If you are pleased, or even honored, to be writing a letter of recommendation for the individual -- say so! A generic, bland opening sentence might show a disinterest in writing the letter. Your first sentence should state your purpose. Your second sentence should be who you know the individual and how long you have known them for.

•  2nd / 3rd Paragraph - The body of your letter should include specific examples and traits related to the individual. The more relevant you can make these examples to the position being pursued, the better.

•  4th Paragraph - Your closing statement should express your specific recommendation. Show your confidence in the individual and reiterate any final points you feel necessary. When closing your letter, reiterate your overall recommendation of the candidate. Invite the reader to contact you if they have any further questions.

Letter of Recommendation

Always ask potential references if they would be willing to write a letter of recommendation for you. Provide them with a copy of your resume to give them the information needed to write the best recommendation. Give the recommender ample time (at least three weeks) to write the letter.

You may hand the recommender a paper form from your starter packet or copy and past this sample request letter into an email. This letter contains a link to the letter of recommendation form. The Letter of Recommendation Form is in a pdf format below.

You must establish a credentials file in the Career Center before utilizing this form.

Recommender: You must be running Adobe X Pro or higher to sign the Letter of recommendation form electronically. Contact the help desk at 97777 for assistance.
