Earth Day Celebration

42nd Earth Day Celebration - April 18-20, 2012

Please join Villanova’s Earth Day Committee in celebrating the 42nd Earth Day. The following events are free and open to VU students, staff, faculty, alumni and the general public.

Wednesday, April 18

5:00 p.m. A Roundtable on the 50th Anniversary of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, Connelly Cinema
Please join Nova students and faculty from Biology (John Olson), Chemistry (Amanda Grannas), History (Paul Rosier) and Philosophy (Chaone Mallory) in a celebration of and reflection on Rachel Carson’s influential book Silent Spring (1962), which exposed the dangers of agricultural pesticides and helped inspire the modern environmental movement. Villanova students will read excerpts of Silent Spring in between short faculty presentations. An organic reception will follow in the Cinema foyer.

Thursday, April 19

9:00 a.m. Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research and the BP Oil Spill Falvey Library Speaker’s Corner
Sarah Tegtmeier, Oil Programs Manager of Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research, Inc., Delaware, will discuss Tri-State’s role as a wildlife responder to oil spills and the animal rehabilitation process, with a focus on the BP/Deepwater Horizon crisis in the Gulf of Mexico in April, 2010. Tri-State is one of only two US organizations that can professionally manage a response to a major oil spill and has a trained staff on call 24/7 to respond to wildlife contaminated by oil spills anywhere in the world. 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Sustainability Fair, Lower Level Connelly Center (indoors)
Eco-vendors, student environmental organizations, information about campus environmental initiatives and Green Jobs, alternative energy companies, raffles of Villanova basketball and football tickets, Dining Service samples, and other displays will take place in the bottom floor of Connelly Center. In addition, students in Introduction to Environmental Science (GEV 1051) will display the results of their semester-long research on Villanova’s campus environment.

11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Sustainability Fair Farmer’s Market, Lower Level Connelly Center (outdoors)
Dining Services has arranged for local vendors, including area farmers, to offer locally grown produce, breads, meats, beverages and other products. Cash only. There will also be a chef on site preparing free samples!

Friday, April 20

12:00-4 p.m. Student Earth Day Festival, Sheehan Beach

Why Sustainability

Villanova University Commitment to Sustainability

The Villanova community views environmental stewardship as part of the Augustinian mission. This stewardship includes policies and initiatives that set forth university-wide standards and goals.

Goal 1 - Villanova University will strive to practice the principles of environmental sustainability and wise use of resources within the university community. Villanova will make reasonable efforts to conserve resources. Methods to conserve may include, among other things:

The promotion of water conservation

Waste reduction and the conscientious use of materials

The conscientious production and consumption of food

The promotion of energy conservation

The use of renewable energy resources

Practicing environmental stewardship of its lands

The acquisition of sustainable modes of campus transportation

The adoption of green building standards

Goal 2 - Villanova University will engage in appropriate learning opportunities with the intention of creating a community whose members (students, faculty, staff, and graduates) are environmentally literate and responsible. Methods to do so may include, among other things:

Integrating social and environmental responsibility into curricular development

Fostering further research and a deeper understanding of environmentally sustainabledevelopment

Creating and promoting an informed network of Villanovans committed to the principles of environmental sustainability
