Summer Music Studies

Welcome to the Villanova Summer Music Program - serving music teachers in continuing education for over 20 years!

Transcript information is located at the bottom of this page.

Schedule

Most courses are scheduled from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday (unless otherwise noted within course list & description).  Orff Courses & String Week have unique schedules, as do any courses that may be offered during the week in which July 4th falls.

Locations

Most classes are held in St. Mary's Hall located on Villanova University's West Campus. In 2012 additional classes will be offered at one off-campus site, Parkland High School, Allentown, PA.  Please view our directions to the off-campus site. We do not offer housing or meal services at off-campus locations.

Tuition

Visit the registration & tuition area of our website for details.  (Be sure to scroll down for tuition information.)  This area includes information on our full courses, waiting lists, and cancellation policies.

Materials, Equipment & Supplies

Our convenient low tuition covers the entire cost of the program including special equipment, texts (if any - note that any texts are sent directly to you before the course begins), supplies, and materials. There are no other costs. However, do check course descriptions for instrumental courses where instruments are not provided.

Credits/Auditing

Each course earns a designated number of graduate credits from our credit granting partner, The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, unless otherwise noted. Any course may be audited for no credit if there is room. There is no discount for auditing. Students may repeat a previously taken course, as the experience and content may be unique each time.  Be advised that course repetition may not be accepted by many school districts or colleges.

Pennsylvania Act 48

Beginning July 1, 2000, Pennsylvania Act 48 of 1999 required persons holding Pennsylvania professional educator certification to complete continuing education requirements every five years in order to maintain their certificates as active.

All of our Summer Music Studies courses are eligible for Act 48 activity hours, and may be accrued during the current moratorium, as explained in the Act 45 & Act 48 Moratorium Update issued by the PA Department of Education.

Students must supply their unique PA Act 48 Professional Personal ID number upon registration in order to have his or her direct contact hours reported.  Students should log into the PA Department of Education website (https://www.perms.ed.state.pa.us/Screens/wfPublicAccess.aspx) to obtain this ID number.  Information regarding course activity hours will be reported to the Commonwealth website beginning in late summer and continuing through early fall.

Registration

Visit the registration & tuition area of our website for details, including information on our full courses, waiting lists, and cancellation policies.

Deposits/Payment

A $100 non-refundable deposit per course is required for registration. Forms of payment include VISA, MasterCard, Discover (Discover not accepted on the online form), personal checks, and money orders only. Debit cards for which a pin number is needed are not accepted. If you are requesting a course less than 14 days in advance, please call to confirm that space is available. Balance is due one month prior to the beginning of your first course - your confirmation letter is also your invoice (additional payment reminders are not sent).

If you make a deposit in order to be placed on the waiting list for a course that is full, you will receive a full refund of the deposit during the week that the course was to take place if a spot in the course does not open.  If you wish to be removed from the waiting list, a refund of your deposit is available upon request.

If you are requesting a course less than one month prior to start of course full payment is due at the time of application.

Housing & Meals

Visit the housing & meals area of our website for details.

Full Courses/Waiting Lists

Many courses fill rapidly because of high demand. Guitar, Drumset, Instrument Repair, and Technology courses are particularly popular. In the event your first choice is not available, if you opt for 'YES' in the waiting list column, we will put you on the waiting list and enroll you in your second choice (if applicable). If your first choice becomes available, we will contact wait-listed students in the order in which registrations were received. If you have not indicated a second choice and the course you have selected is full, we will notify you by email. If you make a deposit in order to be placed on the waiting list for a course that is full, you will receive a full refund of the deposit if a spot in the course does not open.

All students are expected to attend all class sessions regularly and promptly, and for the duration of the scheduled instructional time.  Our courses are intensive and every hour in the classroom is critical.  Our policy is that full letter grade will be deducted for each half day missed (or accumulated latenesses equivalent to a half-day), regardless of the individual circumstance.

Refund Policy
All refunds are less nonrefundable deposits and fees and calculated as follows:

100% refund less the $100 nonrefundable course deposit for withdrawal up to 14 days prior to the first class.

0% refund for withdrawal within fewer than fourteen days.

All withdrawals must be submitted in writing via fax (610-519-7596), email (summermusic@villanova.edu), or letter.

Course Cancellation Policy
Villanova University reserves the right to cancel any course due to insufficient enrollment.  If a cancellation should occur, students will be notified at least seven days in advance and have the option taking another course or receiving a full refund (including the full deposit).

Academic Information - University of the Arts

The University of the Arts is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.  The Office of Music Activities at Villanova University offers these non-matriculated graduate-level courses through the Professional Institute for Educators at the University of the Arts.  In many cases, these credits may be used towards Masters Equivalency programs and may be considered for transfer into some degree programs, depending upon specific curriculum requirements.
