Unfortunately, over the past years, a few fraternities have lost recognition as official student organizations by Villanova University because they failed to comply with university or inter/national guidelines and policies.
Some of these groups continue to operate illegally and without university supervision, personal liability insurance, an affiliation with an inter/national organization, and are devoid of their tax-exempt status with the internal revenue service.
There should be great concern about the well being of students who choose to join these unrecognized organizations. The most important fact to recognize is that these groups ARE NOT fraternities, as they are devoid of any ritual or recognition by an inter/national organization and the Villanova community. Below is a list of recent unrecognized "underground" groups:
- Sigma Alpha Epsilon "SAE"
- Phi Gamma Delta "FIJI"
Please note that any student that chooses to "affiliate" with one of these unrecognized organizations is not complying with guidelines and/or policies regarding involvement in student organizations within the Villanova University Student Code of Conduct, as well as student organizational policies within the Office of Student Involvement. Due to this, any student that chooses to "affiliate" with one of these unrecognized organizations could potentially face disciplinary action by the university.
Any reports regarding these organizations should be directed to Fraternity and Sorority Life staff at 610-519-7280.
