Thank you for visiting the Villanova University Department of Public Safety website. Whether you are just now considering attending Villanova or are a current student or employee, I would encourage you to explore the resources and information available on our homepage.
In October 2015, President Peter Donohue announced that Villanova’s Department of Public Safety would become a police department with a combination of security and police officers starting in Fall 2016. Since then, a great deal of work has taken place to establish a University police department, which began to provide service on August 1, 2016. Over the coming year, the Department will grow to 19 police officers, in addition to the security force that is currently in place. University Police Officers have full arrest powers and several defensive weapons, including firearms.
Enhancing our Department to include sworn, armed police officers is just one way we are working to keep the campus safe. Your role in campus safety is just as important as ours and we depend on you to take your own safety seriously and to communicate any issues or concerns about safety and security on campus. Campus safety is really a partnership between the University and the individuals who make up our community.
As members of the community, I would encourage you to take an active role in your own safety by making responsible choices about issues that affect your personal safety as well as the safety of others in the community. The “little things” like locking your door, not leaving valuables unattended, and making responsible decisions about using alcohol and other drugs, all have a tremendous impact on your safety. Reporting crime and other suspicious activity to Public Safety or someone in authority also helps us do our job in keeping the community safe.
While no campus is immune from crime, Villanova has always prided itself in having an outstanding record for safety. Beyond the basics of securing the campus, the staff here at Public Safety works to live up to the Augustinian values of freedom, respect for the individual, diversity, and inclusiveness. Members of the Department aim to not only provide a safety environment, but do so with courtesy, respect, and a genuine spirit of helpfulness and service.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me with questions, concerns, or general comments regarding campus safety or the service you’ve received. I can be reached by phone at (610) 519-6982 or by email at email@example.com.
