Leave of Absence, Family (Parental/Adoption)

A faculty member, who is his/her child’s primary caregiver, is eligible for up to six (6) weeks of paid leave using his/her sick time bank for absences from work due to:

  • the care of the employee's newborn child; the employee's adoption of a child, or placement of a foster child with the employee and to care for the employee's newly placed child

All sick days paid will be applied toward the twelve (12) week maximum allowed under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), if applicable.  The University will provide an additional period of unpaid FMLA to bring the total paid and unpaid to twelve (12) weeks. The leave to care for a newborn child or for a newly placed child must conclude within (12) twelve months after the birth or placement.  All requests for leave must be made in writing and in accordance with University procedures.  This policy applies only to employees who qualify for FMLA leave, as set forth in the University’s policy and federal law.

Please refer to the Rank and Tenure Policy for extension of the probationary period before tenure.
