175 Faces of Villanova

In 1842, eight Augustinians and 10 students established a place where first-generation Americans, the sons of Irish immigrants—would receive an education rooted in the Augustinian ideals of truth, unity, and love. From a community of 18, we have swelled to a vast and growing Nova Nation.

Our visionary forefathers laid for us a foundation from which has sprung an institution that is truly exceptional. And we—the Villanova community—students, alumni, parents, faculty, staff, continue to build upon that foundation, with the aim of propelling the University forward, so that it can become its greatest self.

When we have visited Amara, so many students greet her and us and when she is home with us, many of her friends are reaching out to her. In his youth, the man who would become St. Augustine was deeply enmeshed in the materialism of the late Roman Empire. In 386, while meditating in a garden, he heard children singing tolle lege (“take up and read”) and this inspired him to read a passage in the Bible that sparked his conversion to Christianity.  This window, from the St. Thomas of Villanova Church, depicts the moment of his conversion, with the evil spirit of his previous life leaving him and the pure spirit of God entering his life.

The first instant I walked on Villanova's campus I had a feeling it was the right place for me, so I followed my gut and decided to become a Nova Nationer! On campus, I am Co-Chair of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), Vice President of Panhellenic, a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, and I have my Chinese minor! I have also conducted undergraduate research on battery reliability with ECE Chairman Dr. Pritpal Singh. This past summer I interned at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, CA as an Avionics Hardware intern and I'm continuing to work remotely for the company this fall. After I graduate, I hope to pursue my doctorate in electronics reliability.

Fr. “Jack” Denny was a familiar figure around Villanova for many years until his recent death.  His main official connection to the University was as an adjunct professor of Theology and as Chaplain to the Law School, but as Pastor of Our Mother of Good Counsel, he also knew many members of the community through his ministry there.

President, 1988-2006

Father Dobbin was President of Villanova University from 1988-2006. He was the longest-serving president of Villanova and supervised an enormous growth in the university’s quality, prestige, campus facilities and financial security.  After leaving the presidency he returned to his first love, teaching Theology. As he said. "Nothing is more gratifying than being in a classroom and connecting with a student."  He is remembered with tremendous affection by all of those members of the community who knew him so well when he was with us.

John Driscoll

Rev. John Michael Driscoll, OSA, ‘48 (1923-2011)

President, 1975-1978

Father Driscoll was President of Villanova from 1975-1978.  He graduated from Villanova, received a doctorate in theology from the Catholic University of America and taught for many years at Merimack College.  At Villanova he served as Vice President for Academic Affairs and then President. Many Villanova faculty and staff members remember him for his warmth, kindness and for all he did to make Villanova the university it is today.  

Jumbo Elliott

James "Jumbo" Elliott ‘35 (1915 –1981)

Alum and Track & Field Coach

 Jumbo Elliott, a Villanova graduate and student-athlete himself,  was the legendary track coach of Villanova’s track team from 1935 until his death in 1981.  His student-athletes won many NCAA championships, broke over 60 world records, and won five gold Olympic medals.  Today a statue of him stands in the stadium, watching Villanova’s athletes continue the tradition.

Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Father Gallen was a beloved faculty Villanova member and Vice President for Academic Affairs.  After graduating from Villanova as a science major he enlisted in the Navy, served as an officer on a destroyer and then worked at Dupont for a number of years before joining the Augustinian Order.  He received his doctorate in biology from the Catholic University of America and then joined Villanova’s faculty first as a professor of biology (where he won Villanova’s outstanding teaching award) and eventually as Vice President for Academic Affairs.  He was especially loved by Villanova’s faculty for his warmth, good judgment, kindness and impatience with bureaucratic details.

Gallen Award for Outstanding Faculty Service (1995).

Window for September 11 Memorial

In Memoriam: The Villanovans who were victims of the September 11th Attack

Fifteen Villanova alumni were killed in the September 11 attacks. They and the other victims are lovingly memorialized in a window in Corr Chapel designed by  Rev. Richard G. Cannuli, OSA, ’73, an Augustinian priest, artist and Villanova University professor. The window depicts the towers, the Pentagon and the field where the third plane crashed. The names of the victims are inscribed in the window.

Ray Jackson

Rev. Owen “Ray” Jackson, OSA, ‘61 (1933-1997)

Alum & Co-Founder of the Center for Peace and Justice

After graduating from Villanova, Jackson joined the marines, reaching the rank of sergeant before he left the service and joined the Augustinian order.  He was a member of the Campus Ministry staff at Villanova, co-founding the Center for Peace and Justice, where he was active for many years. His automobile bumper sticker, "If you want peace, work for justice," was his motto and way of life. Today the Rev. Ray Jackson Community service award is presented each year to a Villanova University Alumni Association organization that has exhibited a decisive initiative in service to the poor or disenfranchised. In addition the Ray Jackson Memorial Fund has been established by many of Fr. Ray's supporters to offer financial grants to Villanova students to help them continue in peace and justice education and in direct service during their time at the University.

Rev. Thomas F. Martin, OSA, (1943-2009)

Faculty and Founder of the Augustinian Institute

After ordination Fr. Martin first taught in high school for a number of years.  Eventually he pursued doctoral studies at the Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary--Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, where he obtained a PhD in Early Christianity Studies (1995). After completing his degree he came to Villanova University to teach in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies (1995-2009), achieving the rank of Professor, as well as being the founding Director of the university's Augustinian Institute. Augustinian scholars around the world rely on his many scholarly works about St. Augustine, but those who knew him personally remember him best for his warmth, kindness and friendship.

Steve returned to Villanova in 1990 first as Director of Undergraduate Admissions and then as the Dean of Enrollment Management, a position he held for 17 years until his untimely death last year.  Steve was completely dedicated to making Villanova the best institution it could be and, especially, to recruiting wonderful students and supporting them once they got here. He will be missed by his many friends.

St. Monica (331-387)

St. Monica, mother of St. Augustine.  Monica and Augustine represent the only mother and son pair who are both recognized as saints by the Catholic church.  This is fitting because their spiritual journey was so closely related.  Monica waited and prayed patiently for St. Augustine’s conversion. This window, in the St. Thomas of VIllanova church, depicts the two of them finally completely together in their spiritual journey, just before Monica’s death just a few months after Augustine’s conversion

St. Nicholas

St. Nicholas of Tolentine (1305-1245)

St. Nicholas of Tolentine was an Augustinian monk from the central region of the Italian peninsula.   He was famous for his devotion to feeding the poor and for being a peacemaker between warring factions of his day.  Many of the pictures of him have a sunburst design, which you see on his chest in the window from the St. Thomas of Villanova Church.  The sunburst seems to be associated with a legend that he miraculously rescued people from a shipwreck

John "Jake" Nevin (1910-1985)

Athletic Trainer

Jake Nevin served as Trainer for Villanova University athletic teams for over 50 years. A great trainer, Nevin is perhaps better remembered as a beloved character and a practical joker cast in the shape of a leprechaun. During Villanova’s 1985 NCAA basketball playoffs, Nevin, then using a wheelchair and suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease, inspired the 1985 Villanova Wildcats basketball team during their run to the NCAA Championship. After his death, later in 1985, Villanova named its fieldhouse after him.

I am a VU alumnus (B.S. Biology, '83) and returned to VU as a faculty member in the Dept. of Biology in 1993.  I teach a variety of courses for science and nursing majors.  I have mentored more than 30 undergraduate and 15 graduate student researchers over the past 23 years. In addition to my regular duties as a health professional advisor, I worked with an amazing group of student leaders to organize a centenary celebration marking 100 years of pre-health student education at Villanova which we hosted in fall 2015.  As of 2016 have spent exactly half of my life on the Villanova campus.  I know this institution very well and care deeply about it and the marvelous young people with whom I have had the pleasure of knowing for the past two decades as a faculty member

St. Thomas of Villanova (1486-1555)

If you turn toward the back wall of the St. Thomas of Villanova Church you will see the beautiful stained glass window St. Thomas of Villanova, looking down at the members of the community named after him.  He was a Spanish Augustinian priest, professor and archbishop.  If you look closely at the picture you will see that he holds a money bag in his right hand, a symbol of his tremendous devotion to the poor of his day (he was often called “the father of the poor”).

Shawn came to Villanova University in 1975 to serve in Campus Ministry, where he eventually became director.  Throughout his life, two ministries were especially important to him.  He had a lifelong passion for music.  At Villanova Fr. Shawn brought together a group called Sanctuary and the focus of their music included both music for liturgy and music as an accompaniment for prayer and contemplation. He also founded Handicapped Encounter Christ, which sponsored retreats where disabled and able-bodied persons came together to experience the healing power of God.  He touched many people through his kind and gentle way of reaching out to everyone he encountered.

My research interests are in developing fiber optic sensors based on microstructured optical fiber technology for chemical sensing and biomedical applications. Outside of the lab, I enjoy cooking, dancing, and learning to fly airplanes.
