Each fall, the Villanova community begins the academic year with a celebration honoring St. Thomas of Villanova, the 16th-century Augustinian bishop of Valencia, Spain, and patron of the University. This tradition will continue in September 2012 with three days of special events.
Friday, September 21 As part of the Community Collection Day, the University will gather items that are needed by local community agencies. The list of items needed is still being compiled; please review the list from 2011 for examples.
Saturday, September 22 will be dedicated to a Day of Service in the Greater Philadelphia region. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and families will partner with community agencies to perform service in local neighborhoods. At the end of the day, groups will return to campus for a Community Dinner in Dougherty Hall. Once again, the dinner will feature the presentation of the annual Distinguished Service Awards which recognize members of the University staff.
Alumni, parents and friends outside of the Greater Philadelphia region are encouraged to participate in the Day of Service by identifying opportunities closer to home. Please visit the Villanova University Alumni Association website for more information.
Sunday, September 23 will feature the closing events of the weekend: Liturgies at 6 p.m., 8 p.m. or 10 p.m. in the St. Thomas of Villanova Church on campus. All faiths are welcome.
