Villanova University Public Safety Advisory

Dear Villanova Parents and Friends:

Yesterday, Public Safety sent an email to all Villanova students, faculty and staff to inform them that federal authorities have notified colleges and universities in our region that threats of violence have been made against "an unspecified university near Philadelphia," of which there are 110. The information includes a date of Monday, October 5, 2015. We have been assured by the FBI that they have no knowledge of a specific threat.

I am writing now to provide some additional information that will help alleviate some of your questions and concerns. The advisory to the Philadelphia-area colleges from federal authorities was sent, in their own words, “with an abundance of caution.” It was sent to our University community in that same spirit. Because the information the federal authorities received is not specific to Villanova University, we will have normal operations today. We do not believe that canceling activities in response to this unspecified information is warranted.

However, I want to reassure you that Villanova is on top of the situation. We have notified the Radnor Police Department and are working in conjunction with them to enhance protection of the campus. In addition, the Public Safety Department has increased security patrols. Making people aware of the situation will also help encourage the reporting of any suspicious or unusual activity that could occur on campus. As always, we ask that all members of our community remain aware of their surroundings and advise them to contact Public Safety at 610-519-4444 if they observe any unusual activity.

The University considers the safety of our students, faculty and staff its highest priority. Please be assured that we will continue to monitor the situation and make decisions consistent with our commitment to maintaining a safe living and learning environment.

Sincerely,

David Tedjeske
Director of Public Safety
