Villanova, Pa. – A total of 314 student-athletes from Villanova University were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team for the 2011-12 academic year, as announced by the conference office. The number of academic honorees from the Wildcats puts a wrap on a year that was once again filled with numerous academic highlights.
To be eligible for the All-Academic Team a student-athlete must compete in a BIG EAST-sponsored sport and compile a grade-point average of at least 3.0 for the entire academic year. For the 2011-12 academic year, the conference recognized a total of 3,370 student-athletes.
Villanova student-athletes as a whole compiled a 3.173 GPA for the spring 2012 semester, making it the 18th consecutive semester with a GPA higher than 3.0 for the student-athletes. There were 21 teams that tallied a 3.0 or higher team GPA in the spring of 2012.
Earlier this summer the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) data was released by the NCAA and the Wildcats had seven teams earn public recognition for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport nationwide academically.
The softball team has earned public recognition for their academic success for seven straight years since the APR system was implemented. Six of the seven Villanova teams with a multi-year APR score in the top 10 percent of their sport have attained this status for at least three consecutive years. The other sports recognized in addition to softball are men's lacrosse, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's indoor track & field and women's outdoor track & field.
Villanova competes in the BIG EAST in 22 of its 24 varsity sports and also competes in CAA Football as well as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in water polo. Including all 24 sports the Wildcats had 343 student-athletes earn at least a 3.0 grade-point average for the spring 2012 semester.
