Villanova’s more than 500 world-class faculty members are distinguished scholars and active members in their respective fields. They engage in cutting-edge research projects, make important breakthroughs in their various disciplines, write books, win industry awards, secure grants, and advise outside organizations.   • Margaret (Peggy) Lyons, DNP, RN, CRNI, program coordinator for Continuing Education and the MacDonald Center for Obesity Prevention and Education, wrote an article, “Parenteral Inotropic Therapy in the Home: An Update for Home Care and Hospice,” which was published in The Journal for the Home Care and Hospice Professional in April 2013.
  • Linda Copel, PHD,RN,CNS,BC,CNE,NCC,FAPA, professor, College of Nursing, wrote a chapter titled, “Men’s Reproductive Health,” for the Brunner and Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing which was published in the 2013 edition.
  • Linda Copel, PHD,RN,CNS,BC,CNE,NCC,FAPA, professor, College of Nursing, wrote a chapter titled, “Cognitive Disorder Test Questions” for NCLEX-RN Review Made Incredibly Easy which was published in the 2013 edition.
  • Linda Copel, PHD,RN,CNS,BC,CNE,NCC,FAPA, professor, College of Nursing, wrote a chapter titled, “Antidepressant Medications,” for the Nurses’ Drug Handbook which was published in the 2013 edition.
  • Tamara M. Kear, PhD, RN, assistant professor, College of Nursing, co-authored an article titled, “Patients’ perceptions of hemodialysis catheter care practices at home before and after eliminating a protective dressing and implementing a showering protocol,” which was published in the Journal of Infection Prevention in July 2013.
  • Jodie Szlachta CRNA, PhD, associate program director, Nurse Anesthesia Program, wrote an article titled, “Peer Instruction of First-Year Nurse Anesthetist Students: A Pilot Study of a Strategy to Use Limited Faculty Resources and Promote Learning,” which was published in the Journal of Nursing Education, Vol. 52, No.6, 2013. 

Board Appointments 

  • Tamara M. Kear, PhD, RN, assistant professor, Villanova College of Nursing, was appointed Committee Chair of the American Nephrology Nurses' Association Research Committee in March 2013.
  • Nancy C. Sharts-Hopko, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor and director, PhD Program, Villanova College of Nursing, was appointed as a committee member for the National League for Nursing Think Tank on Doctoral Preparation for the Educator Role in February 2013.

Awards

  • Tamara M. Kear, PhD, RN, assistant professor, Villanova College of Nursing, was awarded the American Nephrology Nurses' Association Research Abstract Award by the American Nephrology Nurses' Association in April 2013.
  • Carol Weingarten, PhD, RN, associate professor, Villanova College of Nursing, was named the 2013 Advisor of the Year by Villanova University Student Development in April 2013.

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

Over the past four decades, obesity rates have skyrocketed among Americans of all ages. Today, more than 23 million children and teenagers in the United States are obese or overweight – a statistic now considered an epidemic by health and medical professionals. Villanova faculty experts are available to discuss childhood obesity as well as how parents, guardians and educators can teach nutrition and healthy eating habits to children of all ages.
