Pursuing Her Passion: Sydney Naylor '17

Sydney Naylor '17

A childhood love of entertainment and fashion gave Sydney Naylor ’17 the inspiration and focus to pursue a career in these highly competitive industries. Now thanks to hard work, networking and Villanova Law’s comprehensive externship program, she is pursuing her dreams with concurrent externships at Louis Vuitton and BET Networks in New York City.

Naylor first met Tiffani McDonough ’06, Senior Counsel, Employment & Compliance for Louis Vuitton Americas, at Villanova’s student-led Fashion Law Symposium. They kept in touch and a year later, Naylor interviewed for a coveted externship with the fashion house.

At Louis Vuitton, Naylor is responsible for assisting with both transactional and litigation matters. She provides support with labor and employment research assignments, artwork loan agreements and gathering and responding to subpoenas. Naylor also had the opportunity to attend an off-site meeting with attorneys working across parent company LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE’s various divisions. There she met the general counsel for LVMH as well as the Chairman and CEO of LVMH Inc.

Naylor is also in her second semester working at the entertainment channel BET, where she drafts agreements for talent, vendors and third parties. She interacts directly with different areas of the business and is given the opportunity to execute agreements as well as sit in on negotiations.

Reflecting upon her semester in New York, Naylor says, “I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to work in-house for two major corporations. Through these experiences, I have been exposed to various areas of the business and learned the importance of navigating the grey area between yes and no.”

She continued, “As an aspiring in-house counsel attorney it is of the utmost importance to realize that people never want to hear no. It is your job to navigate the terrain to come up with an answer that suits both the business needs and legal requirements.”

Naylor’s faculty advisor Professor Melanie McMenamin is impressed by Naylor’s determination.

“Sydney hustled to create this externship for herself and has made the most of it,” remarked McMenamin. “She has had an incredible experience working on and getting real feedback on a variety of projects.”
