In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Villanova University School of Law (VLS) alumnus David E. Worby '76 became lead counsel in a multi-billion-dollar suit against the City of New York for the rescue and cleanup workers who labored at Ground Zero. Mr. Worby claimed that his clients were inadequately protected from the dust and fumes of the wreckage and, as a result, suffered over 300 different diseases arising from exposures at the site ranging from several days to ten months. The 10,000 cases settled for approximately $800 million, and Mr. Worby also lobbied Congress to pass the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010, which will make another $2.5 billion available to those who became ill after working at Ground Zero.

On November 8, Mr. Worby returned to Villanova to speak to first year students about his role in the 9/11 First Responders litigation (to view the lecture recording, click here). The event also served to honor and thank Mr. Worby for his longtime and generous support of VLS.

He established an endowment to fund the David E. Worby Scholarship, a partial tuition scholarship awarded annually to a third-year law VLS student who has distinguished him or herself in trial advocacy, and the David E. Worby Advanced Trial Practice Course at the Law School. Most recently, he made a generous gift to help fund the construction of the new Law School building and the installation of a video wall in the Law School's Arthur M. Goldberg Commons. In recognition of his support, the Law School's Clinic Office and Video Wall have been named in his honor.

Through his extraordinary legal career and demonstrated commitment to the wider community, Mr. Worby truly exemplifies what it means to be a Villanova lawyer.
