Villanova University School of Law’s 2015 Commencement Address

Villanova, Pa. – John Y. Gotanda, Arthur J. Kania Dean of Villanova University School of Law (VLS), announced that Paul A. Tufano '83 VSB, '86 VLS, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AmeriHealth Caritas, will address the Class of 2015 as the School’s commencement speaker and will also receive the Villanova Law Medallion Award in recognition of his achievements. Commencement will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 15, 2015, in The Pavilion on the campus of Villanova University.

Commencement Speaker:

Paul A. Tufano is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AmeriHealth Caritas, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other integrated health care solutions for those most in need. AmeriHealth Caritas is headquartered in Philadelphia and serves more than 6.6 million people in 16 states and the District of Columbia. Mr. Tufano is also Executive Vice President of Independence Blue Cross, where he previously served as General Counsel.

Prior to joining Independence Blue Cross and AmeriHealth Caritas, Mr. Tufano served as General Counsel of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, from January 1995 until November 1999. Mr. Tufano and a staff of over 500 attorneys represented Governor Tom Ridge and the Executive Branch in litigation, transactions, and regulatory, legislative and criminal justice matters. He was a member of the Governor’s Cabinet and the Governor’s Senior Staff.

Prior to becoming General Counsel of the Commonwealth, Mr. Tufano was a partner with the Philadelphia law firm of Blank, Rome, Comisky & McCauley where his practice focused on labor and employment law.

Mr. Tufano serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Villanova University and is past President of the Villanova University Alumni Association. He is a former trustee of Franklin & Marshall College, The Pennsylvania State University (Governor’s representative), Moore College of Art & Design and Rosemont School of the Holy Child. Mr. Tufano is a former board member of WHYY (public television and radio). He is the immediate past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and past Chairman of the Board of the Philadelphia Shipyard Development Corporation. Mr. Tufano currently serves as a board member of the Committee of Seventy and Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. 

Mr. Tufano is a graduate of Villanova University, where he earned both his bachelor’s degree and law degree.
