The Villanova Law Alumni Association has a long tradition of honoring alumni and students who have distinguished themselves with outstanding professional and personal achievements and those who have loyally dedicated their time and service to Villanova Law and their communities.

This award recognizes outstanding service by alumni to their alma mater. It is presented to alumni who have exhibited outstanding leadership qualities and made significant contributions in time or otherwise to assist the Law School in fulfilling its mission and goals.

The award is named in honor of Professor of Law Emeritus Gerald Abraham who joined the Villanova Law faculty in 1962 and served as associate dean of academic affairs from 1977 to 1992, and twice as acting dean.

This award is given to the third-year student who has contributed the most meaningful pro bono service to those in need.

The award is named in honor of Professor of Law Anne Bowen Poulin who joined the Villanova Law faculty in 1981 and taught and mentored countless students, and helped to advance the Law School through her unwavering service and dedication.

The Villanova Law Alumni Association seeks nominations each year from members of the Villanova Law community for its prestigious service awards.

The VLAA Gerald Abraham Award for Service to Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law, the VLAA Award for Public Service, and, on occasion, the St. Thomas of Villanova Award for Pro Bono Service are presented each year at the Association's Reception and Awards Presentation.

The VLAA Anne Bowen Poulin Award for Pro Bono Service is presented each year at the Association's Third-Year Brunch, which honors the graduating class.

Nominations for alumni service awards received now will be considered in the 2018 awards cycle. All nominations are reviewed and recipients selected by the Association’s Awards Committee, subject to the final approval of the Dean. All nominations are confidential and will be acknowledged to the nominator. The more information you provide about your nominee, the more serious consideration the Committee can give to him or her.

Specific eligibility criteria for each award is below.

  • VLAA Gerald Abraham Award for Service to Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law
    Nominees must have graduated from the Law School. Alumni currently serving as officers or appointed members (excluding ex-officio) of the Association's Board of Advisors are not eligible to receive this award.

  • VLAA Award for Public Service
    Nominees must have graduated from the Law School. Alumni currently serving as officers or appointed members (excluding ex-officio) of the Association's Board of Advisors are not eligible to receive this award.

  • VLAA Anne Bowen Poulin Award for Pro Bono Service
    The Law School Faculty's Public Interest Committee welcomes nominations each year for the third-year student who has rendered pro bono service or has contributed to make pro bono services available, perhaps through the Walter A. Lucas '88 Public Interest Fellowship Program and Pro Bono Society.

  • St. Thomas of Villanova Award for Pro Bono Service
    Nominees must have graduated from the Law School within the past five years and performed exceptional pro bono work since graduation.
