Professor Halpern taught courses in Copyright, Trademark, and Defamation and Privacy: Protection of Personality Interests. He began teaching at The Ohio State University after a 25-year career that included partnership in law firms in New York and Minnesota and positions as vice president and general counsel for two large, publicly held corporations.
Professor Halpern graduated first in his class from the Cornell Law School, where he was an editor of the Cornell Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif. He was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi.
In his academic career, he has published articles on the law of copyright, the law of defamation, contract law, and the rights of privacy and publicity.
Professor Halpern is the author of several books, including The Law of Defamation, Privacy, Publicity and Moral Right: Cases and Materials on the Protection of Personality Interests; Copyright Law: Protection of Original Expression; and Fundamentals of United States Intellectual Property Law.
He has served as the organizer and director of a series of interdisciplinary conferences on intellectual property and technology. Professor Halpern is an elected member of the American Law Institute.
For the 2002/2003 academic year, Professor Halpern was designated the San Filippo Professor of Law at Santa Clara University School of Law.
