Bereavement Leave

Summary of Bereavement Leave:

Bereavement leave is available for faculty and staff members in the event of a death of a family member or other close friends.

Description of Bereavement Leave:

In the event of a death in the immediate family, faculty/staff members may be absent for up to five (5) work days with pay in order to make arrangements for, and to attend the funeral of, or to observe other religious tradition.   “Immediate family” applies to the death of a spouse, parent, child, stepchild, stepparent, legal guardian, sister or brother.

In the event of the death of your grandparent, grandchild, mother-in-law, or father-in-law, you are entitled to up to two (2) workdays with pay in order to attend the funeral or other appropriate service, or to observe other religious tradition. In the event of the death of your or your spouse’s brother-in-law or sister-in-law, faculty/staff members may take one (1) workday with pay in order to attend the funeral or other appropriate service or to observe other religious tradition.  In the event of the death of other family members or close friends, faculty/staff may use one (1) of the emergency days under the sick leave policy to attend the funeral or memorial service in each case.

Eligibility for Bereavement Leave:

All full-time and part-time faculty/staff members who are regularly scheduled to work 1000 hours per year are eligible for bereavement leave.

How to Apply for Bereavement Leave:

It is important for faculty/staff members to notify their department head/supervisor as soon as possible, in the event they need to take a bereavement leave, so that alternate arrangements can be made in the department.  If faculty/staff members have the need for additional time off beyond what is outlined above, they must make arrangements with their department head/supervisor to take vacation or unpaid time off.

Impact on Salary and Benefits:

All faculty/staff are paid for bereavement leave, as described above.   All benefits for which the faculty/staff member is enrolled will continue as if they are actively at work.
