Step 3 - Submitting Tax Forms and W-2s

Villanova's Office of Financial Assistance reviews all undergraduate applicants for financial assistance. Through this process, we compare information provided on the FAFSA and PROFILE forms to that which students and (in the case of dependent students) parents/stepparent have reported on their tax forms.

Prospective freshmen and returning students will submit documentation to the College Board Institutional Documentation (IDOC) Service not to the Office of Financial Assistance.

Please Note:  You will need an IDOC ID Number to upload the tax documents onto IDOC.  After the CSS PROFILE is processed you will receive an email from College Board with your IDOC ID Number and instructions regarding how to upload the documents.

The tax returns that you submit to IDOC must be the final returns that are submitted to the IRS. We cannot accept a draft or estimate.  If you and/or your parent(s)/stepparent will be filing a tax extension, you MUST submit a copy of the IRS-4868 form that is submitted to the IRS. They must also submit a copy of all W-2s or, if they are self-employed, a signed statement with the amount of their AGI and their U.S. income taxes paid.  If you and/or your parent(s)/stepparent filed a Foreign Tax Return, please submit a signed copy of the tax return with the information translated into English and the currency converted to U.S. Dollars using the exchange rate from the date the FAFSA was filed.

Upon review of the forms listed above, additional information may be requested.  You will be notified at that time of what is needed, and how to submit.  To ensure that you are aware of the additional information that is being requested, the student should be monitoring their MyNova account (current students) or their Applicant Status Page (prospective students for 2017-2018) and their Villanova e-mail address on a regular basis.

Please allow up to 2 weeks processing time on all documents submitted to IDOC.

Please view the IDOC Tutorial for the step-by-step instructions and information about key components of the IDOC process.

Starting with the 2013-2014 academic year, to streamline our processes, Villanova University has changed its policy regarding the receipt of all tax documents for verification. ALL returning undergraduate students are now required to send all federal tax documents to IDOC.  IDOC is a service offered by the College Board.

IRS Data Retrieval Tool

Recently, the U.S. Department of Education in conjunction with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) introduced the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, a feature that allows students and parents to import their previous year’s tax information from their filed federal 1040 tax forms directly into the FAFSA on the Web. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool may be used when filing the initial FAFSA, or when renewing the FAFSA each academic year. read more...
