Department Announces Speakers for Annual ECE Day

ECE Day 2013

On November 7, Villanova’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will hold its 27th Annual ECE Day with the theme “Technology in Entertainment.” Sponsored by Lockheed Martin, the day’s activities will begin at 3:00 p.m. in the Villanova Room, Connelly Center, with presentations by industry professionals, and will conclude after dinner with Villanova ECE seniors presenting posters for their team projects.

This year, guest speakers from Rovi, Comcast and NBC Universal will address how technology affects the entertainment experience and will suggest ways in which engineering graduates can help shape the future of the entertainment industry. The presenters will also share how they made the transition from textbook knowledge to tackling real world issues that require not only technical and business acumen, but often creativity and innovation.

2013 ECE Day speakers are:

Matt Dymek, manager of Systems Architecture for Rovi Corporation in Radnor, Pa. Dymek will present “Rovi: Join the Entertainment,” a look at the complex systems that make up the delivery network behind the screen of your television.

Arpit Mathur, lead software engineer for Comcast Innovation. In “Through the Looking Glass: How Technology is Changing Entertainment as We Know It,” Mathur will present emerging technologies that have the potential to reshape the entertainment industry.

Glenn Reitmeier ’77 EE, senior vice president, Advanced Technology Standards and Policy for NBC Universal. A Villanova alumnus who holds over 50 patents in digital video technology and is recognized in the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame, Reitmeier will present “A Personal Journey through the Digital Technology Revolution in Television.” His talk will include an overview of NBC Universal and the scope of its businesses.

The ECE Day event is open to the public and attendees are encouraged to meet Department seniors and offer feedback and ideas on their projects. Registration is not required for the presentations, which are free; however those wishing to attend the dinner must register. The $30 charge supports the cost of food and beverage for current Villanova seniors.
