Dr. Shawn Gross Named ACI Fellow

Dr. Shawn Gross, Associate Professor for Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been named a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI). Recipients of this award have membership spanning at least 10 years and are chosen based on their significant contribution to the use and production of concrete in several areas: education, research, development, design, construction, or management. Dr. Gross was honored during ACI’s Spring Convention, which took place in March in Dallas, Texas.

In Dr. Gross’s capacity as a faculty member in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, where he has taught since 1999, he instructs both undergraduate and graduate students in structural engineering and mechanics courses that revolve around statics, mechanics of solids, structural analysis and design, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, wood, and masonry.

Dr. Gross’s primary research interest is the structural behavior of reinforced concrete members with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement, particularly the serviceability issues of instantaneous and time-dependent deflections and crack widths. For the past three years, Dr. Gross has served as Chair of ACI Committee 440H – Fiber Reinforced Polymer Internal Reinforcement, and Secretary of ACI Committee 435 – Deflection of Concrete Structures. In his role as Chair of ACI 440H, he has led the committee in authoring the “Guide for the Design and Construction of Structural Concrete Reinforced with FRP Bars,” the primary design document used by engineers to design FRP-reinforced concrete in the United States.

The American Concrete Institute is the premier organization for the advancement of concrete technology and development of student and professional engineers. Sustaining nearly 20,000 members spanning several countries, ACI has continued to drive its mission of sharing best practices in concrete technology.
