Villanova's College of Engineering Ranked in the Top 10 Once Again

For the third consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report ranked Villanova’s College of Engineering among the top 10 undergraduate programs in the country. In the magazine's America’s Best College Rankings for 2009, Villanova is ranked No. 10 for engineering schools that award primarily bachelor’s and master's degrees.

"The College’s placement among other top-ranked engineering schools is significant because most of the other institutions focus primarily on engineering," said Dean Gary Gabriele. "Villanova is different. The College of Engineering is part of a larger institution that grounds students in the liberal arts. As a result, students not only receive a solid engineering education but also have the opportunity to develop a broad view of the world and their own futures."

In addition, two of the College's undergraduate engineering programs—Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering—were ranked in the top 10 for engineering schools that award primarily bachelor's and master's degrees. "These rankings testify to the respect that the College continues to garner at every level," Dean Gabriele said.

Engineering faculty, like all Villanova faculty, are dedicated to the teaching mission of the College and the University. An excellent master's program and a growing doctoral program augment that teaching mission. Faculty—not graduate students—teach all classes. Many faculty also conduct nationally recognized research and encourage their undergraduate students to participate in research. This develops critical thinking at an early stage. "One of the main strengths of Villanova’s College of Engineering is the quality of faculty-student interactions," Dean Gabriele said.

The ranking is based on surveys of deans and senior faculty of all undergraduate programs in the country. Villanova is one of the few top-tier undergraduate programs in this category with a strong, highly regarded graduate program. The other members of the top 10 are either service academies (such as the United States Naval Academy) or undergraduate colleges in which all or most of the students are engineering majors.

Villanova University also received the No. 1 ranking in the North region (North – Masters), a spot it has occupied for more than a decade. In addition, Villanova University was ranked No. 1 in the University-Master's North Category for "Great Schools, Great Prices."
