Dr. Frank J. Mercede, P.E. is the Vice-President of Mercede Electric Company, Inc. Mercede Electric was founded in 1985 and provides electrical construction, engineering, and training services to commercial, industrial, and utility clients. Dr. Mercede has an extensive background in electric power engineering. In 1976 he graduated from vocational-technical high school (salutatorian) with a specialty in Industrial Electrical Construction. He then continued his education at Drexel University, receiving the BSEE (first honors, magna cum laude), MSEE and Ph.D. degrees in Electric Power Engineering in 1981, 1983 and 1989, respectively. Dr. Mercede's Ph.D. dissertation involved the development of a framework to assess voltage collapse phenomena in the electric grid. During his undergraduate years at Drexel University and from 1981 to 1984, Dr. Mercede served as an Electrical Project Engineer in the Corporate Engineering Division of Scott Paper Company (Philadelphia, PA). There he participated in the design of industrial control and power systems. Since 1988, Dr. Mercede has taught a wide variety of undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in electric power engineering for Widener University (1988 - 1995) and Villanova University (1996 - present), such as Power System Analysis, Power System Protection, Power System Dynamics, Electric Machines, Advanced Electric Machines, and Electric Drives, and received honorable mention for the Lindback Outstanding Teacher Award in 2009, 2007, 2005, 2004, 2003, and 2002 in recognition of his excellence in teaching. Dr. Mercede is the author of a best-selling IEEE self-study text, entitled Fault Calculations for Industrial and Commercial Power Systems (© 1994), and has authored or co-authored 11 papers and has made presentations in the areas of arc flash hazard assessment, short-circuit analysis, protective device coordination, and power quality assessment and remediation of electric power systems. Dr. Mercede's specialty areas include electric power engineering analysis and design, industrial and utility power system studies, and power quality solutions of mission-critical electrical systems. Dr. Mercede has served on the board of the Delaware Valley Power Quality Group since 1995. He has been a registered professional engineer in the state of Pennsylvania since 1984.
