Senior design seminar changes from a three-semester “design seminar” to a two-semester" capstone design." In 2008-2009, we had 18 projects ranging from a cruciform stake removal tool to the complete redesign of the Formula SAE vehicle frame. The mixture of project supporters continues to grow with support fromAir Products, Johnson & Johnson, Turner Construction, Sunray, the Engineering Alumni Society and more. In addition to financial support, NAVAIR Lakehurst supported three projects including one where we showed that the current tool used by NAVAIR did not meet military specifications.
In 2009-2010, we had 21 projects including three technical service projects in the Philippines and Zimbabwe, and two Mechanical/Electrical projects. The diversity in the projects range from a custom designed bicycle for a physically disabled Villanova student to the design and control of an inverted pendulum. Once againNAVAIR is supporting two projects with technical and financial assistance.
Design seminar focuses students on innovation, analysis, and fabrication of their design products; moreover, the students learn how the real world works in terms of team building and project management. Student enthusiasm is on the rise along with the quality and originality of their designs. The positive feedback from judges and other attendees at the senior presentations indicate that students are not only successful in their product development but also in their presentation skills.
Capstone design is always looking for new and exciting projects as well as sponsorship including in-kind donations of time and equipment or financial support. More information about design seminar and links to previous year’s projects can be found at http://www.classwork.villanova.edu/ME4800.
