Program Objectives

Undergraduate Programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Program Educational Objectives of the Computer Engineering program and the Electrical Engineering program are to produce graduates who:

  1. can use their knowledge, analytical, and design skills to generate and validate sustainable and technically appropriate solutions to practical real world problems.
  2. can communicate and work effectively with others having different roles or responsibilities.
  3. continue to develop their professional knowledge and skills throughout their career.
  4. succeed in their careers by practicing their chosen discipline with professionalism, care and integrity.

The curriculum is structured to provide a thorough foundation in the fundamentals of both computer engineering and electrical engineering. Design and analysis are emphasized throughout the curriculum, using a project-based structure to teach students how to learn on their own and in teams, and synthesize new engineering solutions by using their knowledge and analytical skills. Great importance is placed on developing oral and written communications skills. The curriculum also provides opportunities for an increased awareness of the broader implications of technology and of the social responsibilities of the profession. These Program Educational Objectives are met by satisfying the following outcomes:

  1. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
  2. An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  3. An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
  4. An ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams
  5. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
  6. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
  7. An ability to communicate effectively
  8. The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
  9. A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
  10. A knowledge of contemporary issues
  11. An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
