Alternative and Renewable Energy Technology

Description

Renewable energy systems are poised to grow rapidly in the US over the next decade due to renewable energy portfolio standards (RPS’s) in different states and growing public awareness of climate change. In the Villanova University region, solar, wind, geothermal, and bio energy industries are growing rapidly. There is a growing job market with students educated in this field. Few programs currently exist to support the education of students in the alternative energy field.

Alternative and Renewable Energy Technology Track

Explanation of Track Curriculum

The recommended energy track has four main courses that provide fundamental knowledge in the areas of solar energy, wind energy, battery energy storage, fuel cell energy conversion, and principles of sustainability (including waste minimization, environmental contaminants, water and air pollution, etc.). However, based on individual student interests, other possible elective courses can be taken for the track specialty that include power electronics, electric machines, electric drives, power system modeling, control systems, and general systems engineering. In addition, elective courses can be taken from other tracks, such as for example: a course to be developed in the infrastructure track in sustainable transportation that covers topics of hybrid and electric vehicles including fuel cell vehicles; another course in the infrastructure track on green building design which discusses how buildings can be designed to efficiently use energy and water resources while maintaining high building air quality and minimizing waste.
