The VSB Mentoring Program connects undergraduate students with alumni mentors, building a bridge between the classroom and the professional world. Alumni volunteer as mentors to provide direction and offer a personalized mentoring experience to student mentees.
The program pairs the student with a mentor in their chosen field. The mentor coaches the student to grow academically and professionally by offering tips on networking, job searching, leadership and communication. Mentees who participate in the program gain a trusted advisor and role model to support them in making decisions, navigating the business world and planning their careers.
During the program, mentors share their experience and advice on actions students can take to enhance their professional development and future career success. They talk openly about goals, successes and how to overcome challenges. Mentors have an “insider’s view” and are well positioned to share insights and trends on their industry, profession and other “hot topics” in their fields.
Mentors and mentees have regular contact (live meetings, phone conversations, Skype, workplace shadow, on campus events, etc.) throughout the term of the mentorship, which could last through graduation or beyond.
The VSB Mentoring Program launches in January 2014. It will be introduced as a pilot program for women in the Class of 2016 after they declare their majors. The goal is to match each student mentee with a mentor (1) in her primary field of interest and (2) in the location where the student would like to work after graduation. Learnings from the pilot program will be evaluated and enhancements implemented prior to further expansion of the Mentoring Program.
