John Minalga, Chief Analytical Officer at Swift Capital, Joins Center for Business Analytics (CBA) Advisory Council

The Center for Business Analytics is pleased to announce that John Minalga, Chief Analytical Officer at Swift Capital has accepted an invitation to join the CBA Advisory Council.  Swift Capital is a leading provider of working capital for small businesses. It was recognized in 2015 and 2014 as one of the fastest growing companies in the Mid-Atlantic region by the "Philadelphia 100", a merit based listing of privately held companies. Swift Capital was also recently ranked number 64 on Inc. Magazine’s List of America’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies, an exclusive ranking of the nation's fastest-growing privately held companies.

John joined Swift Capital in 2010 and has over 20 years of experience in marketing and risk analytics, credit risk management and operational management. Prior to Swift Capital, John worked for 10 years at Advanta Bank Corp, working his way up from Senior Business Analyst to Vice President of Credit Analytics and Credit Operations. 

John has a BA in Economics and Political Science from Rutgers University, an MBA in Finance from La Salle University, and is on track to graduate with the initial cohort of the Villanova MS Analytics program in May 2016. 

The CBA Advisory Council is a senior-level, invitation only forum that assists CBA leadership in connecting analytical theory to analytics practice. Advisory Council members share their insights with Villanova students, identify analytics internship and job placement opportunities, help to identify and deliver CBA managed analytics consulting projects, and provide guidance on the content of the CBA's speaker and workshop programs.

Villanova analytics faculty Matt Liberatore, Bob Nydick and Bret Myers and Howard Weiss of Temple University developed an analytical model to rank professional sports records to determine the greatest records in history. Their paper "Revisiting the Ranking of Outstanding Professional Sports Records" was published in the Journal of Sports Analytics in October 2015. Since then articles about the research study have appeared in the Wall Street Journal and Sports Illustrated. Congratulations Matt, Bob, Bret and Howard!

Ed Toben, ’70 VSB and former CIO of Colgate-Palmolive, delivered “Analytics Thought Leader Lecture”

The Center for Business Analytics (CBA) welcomed back Ed Toben ’70 VSB, and retired CIO of Colgate-Palmolive on October 23, 2015 as the presenter for the CBA’s 12th "Analytics Thought Leader Lecture." Mr. Toben presented "How Colgate Transformed Its Strategic and Tactical Decision Making Using Analytics" to an audience of over 120 undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and industry members of the CBA community.

While Mr. Toben was Colgate-Palmolive's CIO, he led Colgate's global implementation of SAP in over 100 countries. He emphasized how the “explosion of information” needs to be analyzed in order to extract knowledge and insights that will aid in strategic and tactical decision making.
