The VCLE is home to the Augustine and Culture Seminar (ACS) – a central part of the first-year experience for all Villanova students. In ACS, first-year students are introduced to a rich cultural heritage of excellence, wisdom, and beauty, through such writers as Homer and Shakespeare, to Descartes, Darwin, and the distinguished thinkers of our own time.
The Center also serves as a resource and gathering place for all Villanova faculty interested in interdisciplinary teaching and research. To this end, the VCLE sponsors a number of initiatives including:
- Expositions: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities
- The Barbieri Lecture series, featuring VCLE faculty research
- The First-Year Learning Communities initiative in conjunction with the Office for Student Life
- The Augustine in Conversation: Tradition and Innovation book series
- The ACS cultural event series for first-year students
- Yearly faculty workshops on teaching interdisciplinary texts in the humanities
- International conferences on topics in the humanities
