National Fellowships and Scholarships

If you are thinking about applying for one (or more) of these grants, stop by the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships in SAC 138. We can help you learn about various scholarship opportunities, guide you through the application process, and assist you in making your goals into reality. We recommend coming in as early as possible once you decide you are interested - even a year or more ahead - to talk about these possibilities, but we welcome you at anytime.

The list is divided into fellowships for graduate study and undergraduate study. Search our full listing of scholarships, fellowships, grants and internships to learn more about these and other opportunities.

Graduate

Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship for Minorities: The Ford Foundationa Predoctoral Fellowship for Minorities awards 50 three year tuition plus $14,000 stipend fellowships for students planning academic careers in teaching and research.

Fulbright Grants: The Fullbright Grants are 950 research, teaching assistantship, and internship grants offered annually for a year or more abroad; competitiveness depends on the country to which you apply.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships: The Gates Cambridge Scholarships grant up to 4 years of tuition plus stipend for students working towards an advanced degree or second bachelor's degree at the University of Cambridge.

Hertz Foundation Fellowships: The Hertz Foundation has 25 tuition plus $25,000 for graduate study towards a PhD in applications of physical sciences (science, engineering, and medical science students).

Jacob Javits Fellowship Program: The Jacob Javits Fellowship Program has 90 four year tuition plus $15,000 stipend for students pursuing doctoral degree or MFA in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.

James Madison Memorial Fellowship: The James Madison Memorial Fellowship has approximately 53 two year tuition plus $12,000 stipend for graduate study leading to an MA in either American history or political science, or MAT (Master of Arts Teaching). Fellowship also fund summer institute at Georgetown University.

Marshall Scholarships: The Marshall Scholarships grant up to 40 awards for two years study in any British university. 

Mitchell Scholarship: The Mitchell Scholarship grants 12 one year tuition plus $11,000 stipend grants for one year of graduate study or research in Ireland or Northern Ireland. 

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships: The NDSEG Fellowships are three years' tuition plus $19,000 stipend grant for advanced study in mathematical, physical, biological, ocean and engineering sciences. 

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships: The NSFGR Fellowships are approximately 900 full tuition and $16,800 stipend grants for three years of graduate study in the natural, mathematical, and social sciences. 

National Security Education Program Graduate International Fellowships: The NSEPGI Fellowships are 70 one or two year grants of $10,000 for study of language or culture in a world region critical to US security. Recipients are responsible for fulfilling a service requirement by seeking employment with federal national security agencies. 

Rhodes Scholarships: Rhodes Scholarships are 32 grants awarded annually for two years of study at Oxford University. 

Soros Fellowship for New Americans: The Soros Fellowships for New Americans grants 30 half-tuition grants plus $20,000 stipend for two years of graduate study.

Undergraduate

Goldwater Scholarships: The Goldwater Scholarships grant approximately 300 scholarships of up to $7500 annually for tuition, fees, books, room and board for science, mathematics, and engineering majors. 

Truman Scholarships: The Truman Scholarships are 75 to 80 scholarships of $30,000 for senior year and post-graduate study leading to a career in public service. 

Udall Scholarships: The Udall Scholarships grant up to 75 scholarships of $5000 for senior year tuition, fees and other expenses.

These grants are nationally the most competitive and widely known scholarship programs for both graduate and undergraduate study. Their applications often require the most preparation, thought, and time, but can pay amazing personal and professional dividends.
