Physical Requirements

Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) and Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

Midshipmen are expected to establish individual fitness programs aimed at achieving increasing levels of endurance and general physical conditioning while at NROTC Unit Philadelphia and throughout their Navy/Marine Corps careers. The effort and initiative shown in this regard is a direct measure of aptitude for service as a commissioned officer.

Navy option midshipmen are required to take the Navy PFA once each semester. Midshipmen 4/C must achieve a "satisfactory" before the completion of their freshman year. 3/C and 2/C midshipmen must maintain a "satisfactory" rating each semester. 1/C midshipmen must achieve an overall level of "good" by the start of their senior year.

1.  The PFA events shall be completed on the same day in the following sequence: sit-reach, curl-ups, push-ups, and 1.5-mile run/walk or 500 yard swim. Tests should be performed one right after the other allowing for no less than 2 minutes or no greater than 15 minutes rest between events.

2.  To pass the PFA, midshipmen must achieve the minimum standard for their age group in each event and pass the sit-reach test. Failure to meet the requirements in any event constitutes failure of the entire PFA regardless of the total number of points earned. A minimum overall score is also required for each age group.

3.  Failure of the sit-reach will not be a failure of the entire PFA. Members who fail the sit-reach will be assigned to a conditioning program emphasizing flexibility.

Marine option midshipmen are required to take the Marine PFT once each semester. 4/C midshipmen must pass the PFT prior to the completion of their freshman year. 3/C, 2/C, and 1/C midshipmen must maintain passing scores each semester.

1.  The PFT consists of three events: for males, the events are the pull-up/chin-up, the bent-knee sit-up, and a 3-mile run; for females, the events are the flexed arm hang, bent-knee sit-ups, and a 3 mile run.

2.  To successfully complete the PFT, midshipmen must complete the minimum requirements listed below for each of the three events, plus earn the required additional points. Additional points may be earned in any of the three events of the test. Failure to meet the requirements in any event constitutes failure of the entire test regardless of the total number of points earned.
