College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ Philosophy Professor Sally J. Scholz, PhD Named Editor of Hypatia

09.18.13 VILLANOVA, Pa. – Sally J. Scholz, PhD, professor of philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Villanova University, has been named editor of Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy. During Dr. Scholz’s five-year term as editor, Hypatia’s Editorial Offices will be housed in Villanova University’s Falvey Memorial Library.

Since the mid-1980s, Hypatia has been the leading venue for the publication of diverse perspectives in feminist philosophy.  The journal prides itself on providing readers with cutting-edge scholarship, and its impact is felt well beyond the field of philosophy.  Articles published in Hypatia frequently find their way into gender and women’s studies courses from other disciplinary perspectives.  This commitment to diversity and excellence is also reflected in the prestigious Editorial Board which includes scholars from around the globe. 

Dr. Scholz assumed the editorship of in July 2013. Her duties include editing the journal and supervising the Editorial Offices for a term of five years. Dr. Scholz teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses at Villanova, including Philosophy of Women, Global Feminisms, Social and Political Philosophy, and Ethics of War. Her research is based in social and political philosophy and feminist theory. Scholz has published numerous books, including On de Beauvoir (Wadsworth 2000), On Rousseau (Wadsworth 2001), Political Solidarity (Penn State Press 2008) and Feminism: A Beginner’s Guide (One World 2010). Her scholarly articles focus on violence against women, oppression, and political philosophy. Prior to selection as editor of Hypatia, Scholz edited the APA Newsletter on Feminism and Philosophy.  Dr. Scholz has been in the Department of Philosophy at Villanova since 1994.
