Gender and Women’s Studies Presents 24th Annual Elizabeth Cady Stanton Research Conference

Noted Historian Dr. Stephanie McCurry is Keynote Speaker

03.05.13 VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Gender and Women’s Studies Program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Villanova University welcomes Stephanie McCurry, PhD, professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania, as the keynote speaker for the 24th annual Elizabeth Cady Stanton Research Conference, to be held on March 18th at 4:30 pm in the Connelly Cinema. Dr. McCurry will be presenting “The Tale of the Soldier’s Wife: War, Gender, and Emancipation”.          

McCurry is a specialist in the history of the nineteenth century United States, the American South, the Civil War, women's history and the comparative history of slavery and emancipation.  She teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Pennsylvania. Her first book, a study of the contradictory politics of slave society in South Carolina Low Country is entitled: “Masters of Small Worlds:  Yeoman Households, Gender Relations and the Political Culture of the South Carolina Low Country” (Oxford University Press, 1995).  It won the John Hope Franklin Prize of the American Studies Association and the Charles Sydnor Award of the Southern Historical Association. Her most recent publication, “Confederate Reckoning:  Power and Politics in the Civil War South” (Harvard University Press April 2010), was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. In addition to being a notable author and professor, McCurry often lectures for many organizations including the Organization of American Historians.

This event is co-sponsored by the Department of History and the Africana Studies Program. All students and faculty are welcome to attend.
